About the Event
This is a special stewardship day (June 25th, July 30th, and Aug 27th). Join artist Tria Smith to collect trash on the beach. Source, scavenge, and sift through trash with us on Sundays this Summer! Smith will then photograph, soak, scrub, air dry, and oven sanitize each day’s harvest of foraged micro-plastics to transform into costumes for a Persephone pageant on the beach. Join us each month in the messy poetry of circularity.
Tria Smith is the co-creator of The Persephone Project, which uses the myth of Persephone to address climate change. Costumes are being made from trashed plastic.
Monthly on the last Sunday of the month (except May), 10:30am-12:30pm
Join friends and neighbors to help clean up and restore the natural area at Kathy Osterman Beach Dunes (also known as Hollywood/Ardmore). Afterwards, stick around to enjoy the sun and a swim in the lake! Please bring your own water bottle and dress for the weather with closed-toe shoes (we have sand burs!) - Meet at the south side of the beach house, just off Hollywood Ave.
- All ages and experience levels are welcome!
- No RSVP needed.
There are accessible places off paved pathways to sit; and water, bike racks, and restrooms right by the meeting place. The activities take place in mostly flat and sandy areas that may be difficult to traverse for people with mobility challenges. Parking in the area is very limited to what you can find on nearby streets. Biking, walking, carpooling, or public transit is recommended.
