Chicago has one of the most spectacular urban waterfronts in the world, but it faces regular threats. Concerted efforts can protect the lake, keep it free and open to the public, and expand awareness of nature-based solutions for shoreline erosion. It is especially important to include underserved populations and residents who live far from the water in the grassroots movement, to be empowered in leading the efforts to protect the lakefront.
Why Chicago’s Lakefront Needs Protection
Chicago’s lakefront stretches 29 miles along Lake Michigan, offering parks, beaches, and natural habitats supports diverse wildlife, including native plants, trees, and birds, while providing residents with space to relax, exercise, and connect with nature.
Despite its beauty and importance, the lakefront faces several challenges:
Shoreline erosion threatens the stability of beaches and green spaces.
Pollution and litter impact water quality and wildlife health.
Limited access for underserved communities reduces the benefits of the lakefront for all Chicagoans.
The Love Our Lakefront program addresses these issues by promoting nature-based solutions, supporting public access, and empowering local communities to lead conservation efforts.
What the Love Our Lakefront Program Does
The program focuses on several key areas to protect and celebrate Chicago’s lakefront:
Expanding Eco-Tourism and Education
The program identifies existing tours and creates new ones to showcase the entire waterfront as a top eco-tour destination. These tours highlight:
Native plants and wildlife habitats
The history of lakefront restoration efforts
Environmental issues affecting the shoreline
By offering engaging, educational experiences, the program connects residents and visitors with the lakefront’s natural and cultural heritage.
Building a Strong Coalition
Love Our Lakefront strengthens partnerships among organizations dedicated to protecting the lakefront’s nature. Some established groups involved include:
Edgewater Environmental Coalition (EEC)
Friends of the Parks
Openlands
Alliance of the Southeast
Together, these groups share resources, coordinate events, and advocate for policies that support the lakefront’s health.
Organizing Public Events and Fundraising
To sustain its efforts, the program organizes public events. These gatherings raise awareness, build community, and generate funds for ongoing work.
